Influences of various ¥á-Adrenoceptor Antagonists on Pressor Responses to Norepinephrine and Phenylephrine in Rabbits

Abstract
Relative potencies of various a-adrenoceptor antagonists antagonizing pressor responses to both norepinephrine(NE) and phenylephrine(PE) were evaluated in urethane-anesthetized rabbits.
1. In whole rabbits, yohimbine and piperoxan inhibited the pressor response to NE more sensitively than that to PE, while prazosin, thymoxamine, labetalol and phentolamine antagonized the pressor response to PE more effectively than that to NE.
2. In spinal rabbits, yohimbine inhibited the pressor response to NE more sensitively than that to PE, whereas prazosin and phentolamine. antagonized the pressor response to PE more effectively, indicating that the responses of spinal rabbits did not differ qualitatively from those of whole rabbits.
From above results it was suggested that both al-and a2-adrenoceptors exist in the peripheral vascular smooth muscle of the rabbit and both are involved in the pressor response.
